Tampa Opens Cooling Centers Due to Excessive Heat Warnings Across Florida
Responding to the ongoing excessive heat warning and heat advisories across the state, the City of Tampa has initiated the opening of cooling centers at various Parks and Recreation centers across Florida.
To ensure the safety of residents facing extreme heat conditions, these cooling centers will be manned by City of Tampa staff, AmeriCorps service members, and Red Cross volunteers. The cooling centers commenced operation on Thursday, August 10, 2023, from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm. They will continue to be available from Friday, August 11, 2023, through Sunday, August 13, 2023, with timings set from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. These centers aim to provide a safe respite and are open to the general public at no cost. Complementary light snacks and water will also be provided.

The City of Tampa has further launched the HEATSAFE text alert system to enhance community awareness and safety during extreme heat conditions. The introduction of this system garnered over 500 opt-in subscribers within the first hour of its announcement. The HEATSAFE system will deliver updates on heat advisories, cooling center operations, cooling tips, and relevant heat-related information, including assistance for utility bills. To subscribe, text HEATSAFE to 888-777. Residents are encouraged to enroll in this free service.
Additionally, the City of Tampa operates 12 pools and 9 splash pads across various locations in the city. Residents are urged to utilize these facilities to beat the heat. The City is also working on extending open swim hours at the Parks and Recreation pools to accommodate the extreme heat. Updates regarding these extended hours will be shared as soon as they are available.
