Tampa Bay's Brush With Hollywood

Tampa has set the scene for many notable Hollywood Films

The Tampa Bay Area has played host to a number of high profile actors and films throughout the years! From George Clooney to Johnny Depp, the area has been the scene of so much movie magic.

1. Cocoon (1985) starring Wilfred Brimley and directed by Ron Howard, was shot around St. Petersburg.

2. Summer Rental (1985) starring John Candy and directed by Carl Reiner was filed all around the Pinellas beaches, John's Pass, and along Beach Dr in St. Petersburg.

3. The Parent Trap II (1986) starring Hayley Mills, was filmed around Tampa and used The Davis Yacht Club for shooting.

4. Edward Scissorhands (1990) starring Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder was filmed throughout Land O Lakes, Wesley Chapel, Lutz, and Dade City. Over 40 residents made their homes available to be filmed. The home in Carpenter's Run Subdivision is currently for sale!

5. Lethal Weapon 3 (1992) starring Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, and Joe Pesci was mainly filed in Orlando, however, the final scene was shot in St. Petersburg. It featured the 68- year old Soreno Hotel being blown up.

6. Cop and a Half (1993) starring Burt Reynolds and directed by Henry Winkler was filmed in Tampa and Dade City. 

7. Ocean's 11 (2001) filmed a handful of scenes in Florida, including a visit to St. Pete's Derby Lane featuring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Carl Reiner. 

8. Dolphon Tale (2011) stars Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd was based on Winter the Dolphin who resides at Clearwater Marine Aquarium. 

9. Magic Mike (2012) stars Channing Tatum and was filmed at several Bay Area locations from Tarpon Springs to Downtown Tampa. 

10. Spring Breakers (2012) starred Selena Gomez and Ashley Benson and featured scenes filmed throughout St. Petersburg, as well as the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota.

11. The One and Only Ivan (2020) starring Bryan Cranston, Danny Devito, and Angelina Jolie filmed all over Polk County, including the Silver Moon Drive-In, Dobbins Park and the Southgate Shopping Center.
