Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority (HART) was notified this week they are receiving a grant for $4,863,280 through the Passenger Ferry Grant Program. Hillsborough county's Cross-Bay Ferry returned in fall of 2021 and transports passengers from Tampa to Saint Petersburg. The Tampa Ferry Terminal is located on the waterside of the Tampa Convention Center (333 S. Franklin St. Tampa, FL 33602) and the Saint Petersburg Terminal is located on Bayshore Drive NE (375 Bayshore Dr. NE, St Petersburg, FL 33701) between 2nd Ave North & 5th Ave N across from North Straub Park - just south of the Vinoy Hotel.

U.S. Representative Kathy Castor states "--this grant will allow HART to significantly reduce operational costs while expanding the Cross Bay Ferry service, helping to grow intercity and commuter ferry service. It will grow a popular transit option between Tampa and St. Pete, reduce congestion, create local jobs, support small businesses and increase connectivity in the Tampa Bay region. In fact, over 90 percent of the CBF passengers patronize restaurants, shops, museums and sporting events in these two urban areas. This investment is a win-win-win for our community and all of our neighbors."

The ferry itself is a twin-hull aluminum catamaran, holds up to 149 passengers, and cruises around 29 knots (33mph). Guests may bring up to 2 pieces of luggage and 1 small personal item at no additional cost. Bikes are also permitted on the ferry.

Transit time from terminal to terminal is approximately 50 minutes - similar to driving, weather and traffic may vary the transportation time. It's important to note that all guests must be ready for loading 20 minutes before departure. The ferry's schedule is posted online on the ferry's website.  A one way adult fare is $10, and round trip is $20. Children 4 years and younger are free. The ferry is handicap accessible and the fare for those in a wheelchair is $5 one way and $10 round trip. Fares for Seniors (65+), Military, College Student (with ID) and youth (5-18 years) one way $8 and round trip $16.

The Cross-Bay Ferry is a unique (and scenic!) form of public transportation that allows a relaxing cruise through Tampa down to St. Petersburg. With affordable ticket options, and terminals in the heart of each city, the ferry is an ideal mode of transportation. For more information, or to book your ride, visit the ferry's website here
